If you are considering rhinoplasty, you likely have many questions about whether the procedure is right for you.
Dr. Fredric Newman can determine whether you are a good candidate for rhinoplasty during a consultation at our Connecticut plastic surgery practice. Learn more...
You will meet with our plastic surgeon at his Darien, CT, office in Fairfield County to discuss your goals and assess your candidacy for rhinoplasty. Some important factors to consider include:
Rhinoplasty is the third most popular cosmetic procedure performed in the United States, and it can be performed on virtually all healthy adult men and women. Development of the facial features must be complete before undergoing nose surgery, so younger individuals may need to delay treatment. The nose typically reaches maturity by age 15 to 17 in females and 17 to 19 in males. If you are under the age of 18, a parent or guardian will generally have to accompany you to the consultation. For younger individuals, Dr. Newman will encourage you and your family member to discuss your reasons for wanting the procedure before deciding whether surgery is right for you.
We never recommend surgery for those who are in poor physical health or who suffer from a severe illness. Dr. Newman will perform a physical examination to determine whether you are healthy enough to undergo the procedure. It is important that you are transparent with the doctor about your medical history so we can assess the risks associated with plastic surgery.
The best candidates are people who refrain from smoking and live a healthy lifestyle. Smoking before surgery can make it far more difficult to maintain breathing during anesthesia, compromise the healing process, and cause other complications. Smokers should plan to quit smoking several weeks before the procedure. To ensure that your body heals properly, you should not smoke after the operation. Smoking will increase the chance of infection and prolong the recovery period. If you are considering cosmetic surgery, take the opportunity to kick the habit for good.
"Before selecting Dr. Newman as my surgeon, I went to three other consultations. Dr. Newman was my third consultation and instantly I knew that he would be my best option from how he went over the procedure, recovery process, and the realistic results I should expect. I got my rhinoplasty done only three weeks ago and already could not be happier with my results. Each day my nose continues to look better and better. Dr. Newman & staff have provided above satisfactory care and I would recommend him to anyone looking to get a rhinoplasty."

The Aesthetic Surgery Center of Connecticut in Darien, CT, can help patients to address both cosmetic and reconstructive issues. Surgical nose reshaping may be recommended if you wish to address:
The surgeon can perform a nose job to reshape a wide bridge or repair the internal structure to improve breathing. This type of nose job can take from one to two hours to complete, depending on your specific circumstances. If you have a hump on the bridge of your nose, Dr. Newman will use a special tool to reduce the size of the hump. To make the bridge narrower, he can fracture the bones and, in some cases, remove excess cartilage. He will then move the bones together, creating a narrower bridge and a more refined appearance.
The flair or width of the nostrils is another common concern among patients. Dr. Newman can create a narrower nose by changing the way the skin lies at the bottom of the nose. In a procedure known as “minimizing wedges” or "alar base resections," Dr. Newman removes small wedges of skin from the base of the nostrils, where they meet the cheeks. Dr. Newman then carefully closes the trimmed area with fine sutures, eliminating the risk of visible scars. With the nostrils positioned closer together, the flare of the nostrils is reduced, the tip appears more refined, and the entire nose appears more slender.
In addition to seeking a remedy for a wide bridge, hump, or flaring nostrils, a patient can choose to have a nose job to correct a boxy or bulbous tip. Many of our patients feel that the tips of their noses are too large, project too far forward, or hang down too far. This issue is relatively simple to fix by trimming the cartilage in the tip and reshaping it. Additionally, trimming the septum, or the thin partition between the nostrils, can improve the angle of the nose to the upper lip, eliminating the “hooked” quality that some noses possess.
This procedure can be an effective solution for patients who have difficulty breathing. A turbinectomy procedure reduces the projections of the turbinate (the internal structures that warm and add moisture to the nose's airflow). Another common issue that can be corrected with reconstructive surgery is a deviated septum (in which the wall of tissue separating the nostrils deviates too far to one side). A septoplasty repositions the septum to the center of the nose, improving your ability to breathe while also straightening the bridge of your nose.

Healthy teenagers whose facial features have fully developed may be eligible, but it is incredibly important to make sure that your child wants the procedure for their own satisfaction, and not to appease anyone else. In fact, that holds true for patients of any age who wish to undergo surgical nose reshaping. Dr. Newman recommends that you and your child spend plenty of time discussing the reasons for wanting plastic surgery.
When you choose the right plastic surgeon, you can absolutely achieve the enhancements you want without obscuring your ethnicity. In fact, Dr. Newman has helped many patients to achieve this very important goal.
Yes - Dr. Newman can provide subtle enhancements using injectables. However, it is important to understand that the results are temporary, and the capabilities of this option are limited; for example, this solution may not be able to improve the appearance of a large bump on the bridge of the nose. Dr. Newman can help determine if plastic surgery or a noninvasive alternative is the best way to reach your goals.
It's possible. Revision rhinoplasty is more difficult than an initial procedure, so it is important to choose a surgeon who specializes in rhinoplasty in order to achieve the results you truly desire. Dr. Newman can provide reconstructive surgery that finally gives you the satisfaction you deserve.
