What to Expect during Your Brow Lift Recovery By Dr. Fredric Newman on March 05, 2018

The eyebrows and forehead are often the first areas of the face to exhibit signs of aging. If you have deep creases, sagging skin, or droopy eyebrows, a brow lift can smooth and contour the upper third of your face for a vibrant, more youthful appearance. At our Darien, CT, plastic surgery practice, Dr. Fredric Newman can perform this procedure for all patients desiring a refreshed look. Today, we will discuss what to expect during your brow lift recovery, as understanding a few simple tips and tricks can help you heal quicker and more comfortably.

Post-Surgical Discomfort

Most patients experience minimal pain following a brow lift, but it is still important to note that some degree of discomfort is typical following this type of surgery. Dr. Newman will prescribe medications to help alleviate discomfort. You can also take over-the-counter pain relievers as needed. Because the incisions will be near the scalp line, you may experience some itching, especially once they begin to heal. It is important to avoid scratching the area, as it can significantly impede healing. Dr. Newman can give you specific instructions on how to address post-operative itching.

Bruising and Swelling

You will also experience some level of swelling and bruising during your brow lift recovery. Generally, swelling reaches its peak about four to five days after your surgery before diminishing, and bruising may linger a few days longer. To combat inflammation, apply a cold compress over your eyes in 20-minute increments. This will be most helpful during the first 24 hours. You can also ask Dr. Newman about certain supplements that can help decrease bruising and swelling, such as arnica or bromelain.

Dietary Restrictions

When you wake up after your procedure, you will probably be hungry. Because of the anesthesia, we recommend starting with lighter, liquid foods such as smoothies or soups. After 24 hours, you can begin to introduce solid foods into your diet once again.

Limited Activity Level

A brow lift will not require weeks of bed rest. In fact, it is a good idea to move around as soon as possible to reduce complications. However, any heavy exercise or strenuous activity should be avoided for about one month after your surgery. Patients who have a sedentary job are typically able to return to work after about one week. Those who have physically demanding jobs may need to wait at least two to three weeks.

Stay Hydrated

It is crucial to drink plenty of water during your brow lift recovery. This may seem counter-intuitive, as the fluids given to you through IV sedation can actually lead to frequent bathroom breaks. However, it is important to replace those fluids as readily as possible.

How Long Until I See Results?

After plastic surgery, we understand most patients are quite excited about seeing their new look. Waiting for the bruising and swelling to diminish can sometimes seem like an eternity, but it is important to be patient. Most individuals notice a significant decrease in side effects approximately 10 to 14 days after their procedure. At this time, you will begin to see the final results of your treatment.
