Nasolabial folds can have a negative impact on your looks, so we'd like to consider what they are and how they can be treated in greater detail right now.
About Nasolabial Folds
Nasolabial folds are the lines that extend down from the corners of a person's nose down to the corners of the mouth. These lines naturally occur on everyone's face, and they are most noticeable when you laugh or yawn. Yet sometimes these lines can be extremely pronounced, causing you to feel extremely self-conscious about your appearance.
Causes of Nasolabial Folds
In general, the added prominence of the nasolabial folds are the result of the natural aging process. Collagen under the skin breaks down over time, and issues with the overall tightness of the skin will occur as well, making certain facial lines become more prominent than others. These matters tend to be genetic to some extent. If close family members have nasolabial folds, you are more likely to have them as well.
Thankfully there are a few treatment options out there to help reduce the prominence of these facial lines.
Dermal Filler Injections
Dermal fillers are cosmetic injections that help add prominence and volume to the injection site. These dermal fillers are ideal for major follows and deep lines, making the skin in the injection site appear plumper and more supple.
Dermal fillers come in different forms and compositions, so the ideal dermal filler can be tailored to your needs. In general, the results of dermal filler treatment last for several months, and repeat filler treatment can be done as needed.
Fat Transfer Treatment (Microlipoinjection)
Fat transfer treatment refers to the use of liposuction to extract fat from a person's body followed by the injection of the fat into a different part of the body. This works on similar principles as dermal filler treatment, but avoids the possibility of allergic reactions and adverse side effects since it relies on a person's own body fat.
In essence, fat transfer offers the benefits of dermal filler treatment with the added benefit of liposuction. Typically the fat is harvested from the abdominal area, the buttocks, or the hips.
Are There Any Surgical Treatment Options?
In general, facial plastic surgery is not an ideal option to consider for treating nasolabial folds. Lifts and tucks are typically more ideal for addressing loose skin and sagging skin rather than major lines. However, if a patient does experience issues with jowls or the neckline, there are facial surgery options for the neckline and cheek area that can prove quite effective.
