Laser stretch mark treatment is performed using an excimer laser, similar to that used in LASIK eye procedures. An excimer laser is ideal for skin resurfacing procedures because it employs ultraviolet light rays to disrupt the cells on the surface of the skin. This process, known as ablation, harmlessly disintegrates the cells of the epidermis to reveal healthy, smooth skin. Depending on how conspicuous the stretch marks are, several layers of skin may need to be ablated to reach the desired results, and this may require more than one treatment session. You can rest assured, though, that laser stretch mark removal can greatly reduce the appearance of your stretch marks.

The recovery process for laser stretch mark removal is quick and relatively pain free. As the top layers of the skin are removed via laser and peeled off, there is likely to be some tenderness and red coloration. These symptoms typically disappear in just a few days, though the healing process can take up to a week. There may be some minor discomfort similar to that of a sunburn after the procedure, but it is important to remember that no damage has been done and the symptoms are temporary.
