BOTOX Cosmetic and Dysport
BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® injections provide a fast and safe way to reduce fine lines and wrinkles without having to undergo surgery. Approved for cosmetic wrinkle reduction by the Food and Drug Administration, these injections can treat areas on the forehead or around the eyes, nose, and lips. While they share many similarities, one treatment may be better suited to you than the other, depending on what you want to achieve. Dr. Fredric Newman can determine if BOTOX Cosmetic or Dysport treatments are right for you during a consultation at his Darien, CT, office.
How BOTOX Cosmetic Injections Work
Facial wrinkles on the forehead and around the eyes and mouth are caused by the repeated contractions of the underlying muscles in those areas. That is why these areas are often called “frown lines” or “smile lines” — making these facial expressions over the years eventually causes creases to appear in the skin. Botulinum toxin, the active ingredient in both BOTOX Cosmetic and Dysport, temporarily paralyzes these muscles. When the muscles relax, fine lines and wrinkles virtually disappear. Patients frequently choose BOTOX Cosmetic to address crow's feet and the 11's (parallel lines that can develop between the brows). Today, BOTOX Cosmetic is one of the most popular injectable skin treatments available.
BOTOX Cosmetic treatment involves a series of injections performed using a fine needle. Most patients do not experience significant discomfort. A topical anesthetic can be applied as needed. Each injection takes only a few seconds, and the entire BOTOX Cosmetic treatment can usually be completed in less than 15 minutes, earning it a reputation as a "lunch break procedure."
Following BOTOX injections, most patients experience very few side effects. Some patients experience temporary numbness. Although infrequent, minor bruising can also occur. This should also fade within a relatively short time. Results may take several days to become evident and can be expected to last about three to six months. Patients can undergo touch-up treatments to maintain their results. With repeated injections, patients may notice that their results last longer, extending the time they can go without retreatment.
BOTOX Cosmetic injections are considered a completely safe procedure for most patients desiring nonsurgical rejuvenation.
BOTOX Cosmetic Candidacy
BOTOX Cosmetic injections are considered a completely safe procedure for most patients desiring nonsurgical rejuvenation. Pregnant women and those with certain medical conditions such as high blood pressure, heart disease, and any skin disorders are among the few who may be precluded from undergoing the treatment. Dr. Newman will carefully assess your medical history and other candidacy factors before recommending BOTOX Cosmetic or Dysport. More substantial signs of aging, such as sagging eyelids, might be better suited to surgical correction.

Dysport is a relatively new cosmetic injectable treatment that offers many of the same benefits as BOTOX Cosmetic. The primary difference is that Dysport disperses more than BOTOX Cosmetic, which can benefit those wishing to reduce wrinkles in the forehead. Meanwhile, the onset of the results generally occurs sooner than BOTOX Cosmetic results.
The treatment process with Dysport is also very similar to BOTOX Cosmetic. The Dysport solution will be injected into the target areas with an ultra-fine needle. A topical numbing agent can be applied before the injection to make the procedure as comfortable as possible. The entire treatment usually lasts about 15 minutes, depending on the number of areas being treated.
You may experience some mild swelling and redness around the injection sites, but this should subside quickly and you should be able to resume normal daily activities immediately after the procedure. The effects of Dysport can last three to four months and can be maintained with follow-up treatments.
