Scars occur when there is damage to the skin. There are a multitude of possible causes of skin damage, including physical injury, acne, and skin disorders such as chickenpox. Because of this, scars can vary greatly in size, shape, and appearance. The severity of a scar depends on the degree of the injury, and the effectiveness of scar removal treatment is in part dependent on the size of the scar. Laser scar removal works by removing damaged epidermis cells from the skin’s surface. By pulsing the laser over the affected area, the outer layers of skin can be removed to reveal healthier, smoother skin. The laser works by breaking down the molecular bond of the damaged skin cells and is quick, effective, and relatively pain free. To achieve optimal results, multiple layers of skin will often be subjected to the laser. This technique is sometimes referred to as a laser peel, because the dead layers of skin are peeled away after they have been treated with the laser.
Though the results of laser scar removal will depend on a variety of factors, you can expect smoother skin, reduced color, and reduced size around the scar.
