What is BOTOX® Cosmetic?
BOTOX® Cosmetic is actually a purified form of botulinum toxin. It works by relaxing the muscles surrounding facial wrinkles so that the skin smoothes. In fact, BOTOX® Cosmetic was originally used to stop muscle spasms in the face and neck regions. Doctors noticed that patients lost their wrinkles as well as their muscle spasms, and so the use of BOTOX® therapy for wrinkle removal was born.
How BOTOX® Injections Work
Facial wrinkles on the forehead and around the eyes and mouth are caused by the repeated contractions of the underlying muscles in those areas. That’s why these areas are often referred to as “frown lines” or “smile lines” — they are caused by the long-term use of the muscles in those areas. BOTOX® Cosmetic works to remove the wrinkles by limiting the muscle contractions in the areas surrounding unwanted facial lines. When the muscles relax, the wrinkles are smoothed away.
BOTOX® treatment involves a series of injections performed with a tiny needle. Most patients do not experience much discomfort, although some people do not like the needle prick. Luckily, each injection lasts only a few seconds, and the entire BOTOX® treatment can usually be completed in less than 15 minutes at our Darien, Connecticut office near New York. The results of BOTOX® injections are not permanent, but the procedure can be repeated every few months to maintain results.

Recovery Following BOTOX® Cosmetic Treatment
BOTOX® therapy is an outpatient procedure, requiring little or no downtime. Most patients can go back to work or other activities the same day that they receive treatment.
Following BOTOX® injections at our Connecticut office near New York, most patients experience very few side effects. Numbness is possible, but it should be temporary. If patients rub the areas treated with BOTOX® Cosmetic, the surrounding areas may also experience muscle laxity and droopiness. A “hands-off” policy can help limit this. Finally, infrequently, minor bruising can occur. This should also fade within a relatively short time.
BOTOX® Injection Results
Results may take several days to become evident. Facial wrinkles should then noticeably diminish. As mentioned, the results of BOTOX® Cosmetic are not permanent and tend to fade after about three months. Patients can repeat BOTOX® treatment as needed. With repeated injections, patients may notice that their results last longer, extending the time they can go without being retreated.
Potential BOTOX® Injection Health Concerns
BOTOX® injections are considered to be safe procedure for most people. Pregnant women and people with certain medical conditions may be precluded from having the treatment, however. Dr. Fredric Newman of The Aesthetic Surgery Center can help you decide if you are a good candidate for BOTOX® injections.
Dysport® Injections
Dysport® is a new cosmetic injectable treatment that offers many of the same benefits as BOTOX® Cosmetic. Designed to temporarily prevent facial muscles in the targeted areas from contracting and causing wrinkles and fine lines to appear, Dysport® works to smooth out facial skin and give you a more refreshed and youthful appearance. The treatment process with Dysport® is also very similar to BOTOX® Cosmetic procedures. The Dysport® solution will be injected into the target areas with an ultra-fine needle. A topical numbing agent can be applied before the injection to make the procedure as comfortable as possible. The entire treatment usually lasts about 15 minutes, depending on the number of areas being treated.
Patients can often expect to see the most optimal results within the first few days after Dysport® treatment. You may experience some mild swelling and redness around the injection sites, but this should dissipate quickly and you should be able to resume normal daily activities right after the procedure. The effects of Dysport® can last three to four months, and be maintained with follow-up treatments.
