Full lips can make all the difference in your look. Fortunately for those who find their natural lips lacking, they can be filled out cosmetically. At The Aesthetic Surgery Center of Connecticut near New York, we offer three lip enhancement, or lip augmentation, options to suit every patient's needs. One of these lip augmentation methods should be able to help you if you seek fuller, more luscious lips.
Collagen injections and other "filler" materials, as provided at our Connecticut- and New York-area office, are the most popular methods of lip augmentation. Lip enhancement using collagen adds significant volume to the lips, giving a plump, "pouty" effect that typically lasts for several months. Collagen is a protein found naturally in the skin, and may be derived from either human or bovine (cow) sources.
The collagen lip enhancement procedure is very simple and takes approximately ten minutes to complete. First, Dr. Fredric Newman will decide where to administer the injections through an examination of your face and lips. Dr. Newman will then inject the collagen under the skin in the lip with a small needle. You may experience some tenderness or discomfort after your lip augmentation, but this sensation should be minor. One of the great features of lip enhancement with collagen is that you can see a change in your lips immediately following the procedure.
Collagen lip injections are a safe, effective, and subtle way to improve your facial appearance. In order to ensure beautiful results, you will be allergy tested at our New York- and Connecticut-area office prior to your collagen lip enhancement.
The fat transfer method of lip augmentation involves taking fat cells from a donor area of the body, such as the abdomen or buttocks, and transplanting them to the lips for a fuller appearance. One reason fat transfer is so popular with our Fairfield, Connecticut- and New York-area patients is that this method of lip enhancement poses no risk of allergy, since the cells are being taken from the patient's own body.
First, the fat that is to be used in the procedure is harvested from another area of the body and purified. The fat is then injected in the lips with a tiny needle. Generally, fat injections provide longer-lasting results than collagen lip enhancement because the material is not foreign to the body and therefore will not be digested as quickly. As with collagen injections, the results of fat transfer are temporary, but the procedure can be repeated periodically.
V-Y flap reconstruction uses a skin-advancement technique to create a flap in the lip that can then be repositioned to reveal more of the pink lip tissue. Traditionally used in reconstructive surgery for people with skin defects, the applications of this technique have been expanded to lip augmentation since the treatment can make lips look fuller and more attractive.
The procedure consists of making a V-shaped cut in the lips, sliding the V-shaped wedges forward, and then stitching them back up, creating a Y shape. The result is an increase in tissue in the lip area. The incision is made inside the mouth, to push the tissue inside the mouth upward and outward. The result is a fuller lip.
Complications can include infection and scarring, but are extremely rare. Patients who have undergone this procedure at our New York- and Connecticut-area office should wait several days after their lip augmentation before returning to work. The V-Y flap reconstruction is a popular procedure because it is the longest-lasting method for lip enhancement, as the results are permanent.
Lip augmentation is often performed in conjunction with other facial plastic surgery procedures, including rhinoplasty, forehead lift, mid-facelift, and placement of chin implants, in order to create an even more dramatic effect. Different methods of lip enhancement will be appropriate for different patients.
