Breast Implant Revision and Secondary Augmentation – Connecticut and New York

For women who have breast implants, it is not uncommon to undergo an operation for implant revision or replacement. Breast implants are typically not designed to last forever, and there is a possibility they may leak or deflate. Fortunately, the breast implant revision procedure at The Aesthetic Surgery Center of Connecticut near New York is usually less complicated than the initial implantation surgery and generally requires less recovery time. Contact our plastic surgery center today to learn more or to schedule a breast implant revision consultation.

Reasons for Breast Implant Revision

There are a variety of factors that contribute to the need for breast implant revision. Some of these include:

Breast Implant Deflation

Deflation is one of the most common reasons why breast implant revision may be required. Saline or silicone breast implants can leak. This becomes noticeable if the size and shape of the breast appears to have changed. Saline implant deflations are generally more apparent than silicone deflations because saline is quickly absorbed by the body, resulting in a noticeable change in size. With silicone implants, an ultrasound or mammogram may be required to verify an implant leak.

Implant Hardening

A hardening or encapsulation of the implant can cause discomfort or a distorted appearance, leading some patients to seek implant replacement.

Implant Exchange

Patients who are unhappy with their original implants or who feel that their implants are disproportionate to their body frame may want breast implant revision. The original implants can be exchanged for bigger or smaller ones.

Rippling

Implant rippling can occur in saline and silicone implants. Rippling is more commonly felt before it is seen, and breast implant revision can be performed to reduce the rippling effect.

Undesired Appearance

Women who simply don't think the implants look or feel natural may want an adjustment or removal.

The Procedure

After the initial consultation, Dr. Fredric Newman will generally utilize the incisions made during the first implantation to remove the breast implant. After appropriate revision, a new implant is placed. The procedure may vary if you are undergoing breast implant revision in conjunction with a breast lift, or if you are changing from one type of breast implants to another (such as silicone to saline).

Revision Recovery

Breast implant revision at our Connecticut surgery center usually takes about two hours and is performed under general anesthesia. Mild discomfort and pain may be present for a few days, and swelling usually subsides over several weeks or months. Most patients can resume their normal daily routine within a week after surgery.
