Collagen Injections at The Aesthetic Surgery Center – Connecticut and New York

As an alternative to invasive cosmetic surgery, Dr. Fredric Newman offers collagen injections at his New York- and Connecticut-area office. Collagen is a naturally occurring protein that effectively smoothes the skin. The appearance of frown lines and smile lines as well as light creases and shallow scars can all be improved using collagen injections. Collagen injections can be performed on their own or in conjunction with other treatments.

What is collagen?

Collagen gives strength and flexibility to the skin, forming a mesh-like structure that supports new cells as they grow. When collagen diminishes, skin sags, loosens, and loses resiliency. This important protein is found throughout the body — in the bones, skin, and muscles — but levels of collagen begin to wane with age.

How long has injectable collagen been used?

The important role of collagen in the body led to the creation of an injectable form of the protein. Injectable collagen was first used in 1982 and has grown in popularity since then. Half a million people have opted to receive collagen treatments in the time that they have been available. Dr. Fredric Newman is one of 3,500 physicians who provide injectable collagen across more than 20 nations. Dr. Newman performs collagen treatments at his office in Darien, Connecticut, which also serves patients from New York.

How does collagen work?

Injectable collagen supplements the skin's natural network of collagen in areas where it has become depleted. For example, collagen can be injected into the area of a scar. By increasing the supportive layer of collagen, the scar can be filled in. Wrinkles are filled in a similar method. As a result, skin looks younger, smoother, and softer.

Are collagen injections a substitute for surgical procedures such as facelifts?

Injectable collagen is not meant to be used in place of surgical procedures, but it may be used in conjunction with them. Facelift, for example, removes loose, excess skin, tightening and smoothing away wrinkles. Collagen injections can then fill in small depressions or other imperfections to enhance the effectiveness of the facelift. The same is true with skin resurfacing. Sometimes a combination approach provides the best results. On the other hand, patients looking for a more subtle improvement may be satisfied with injectable collagen alone. To find out whether you are a candidate for a surgical treatment or if collagen injections alone will suffice, contact our Darien, Connecticut office near New York today.

What is the difference between collagen creams and injectable collagen?

Collagen creams are essentially moisturizers. They protect the skin from losing water and can temporarily ease lines caused by dry skin. Unlike injectable collagen, however, such creams cannot get to the deeper layers of skin. Only injectable collagen can help to recreate the meshwork of collagen beneath the skin that contributes to its firmness and smoothness.

Who can be treated with Zyplast® collagen or Zyderm® collagen implants?

Many people are good candidates for these types of collagen treatments, but some patients should opt for another procedure. In order to determine whether or not you are a good candidate for either of these collagen treatments, you will need to schedule a consultation at our Fairfield County, Connecticut office, also serving Westchester County, New York. Dr. Fredric Newman will give you an allergy test, review your medical history, and talk with you about your cosmetic goals.

How does the skin test work?

Most people tolerate collagen injections very well (about 97 percent of potential patients), but to make sure it is right for you, Dr. Newman will need to administer a skin test prior to your treatment. This involves injecting a small amount of collagen into your forearm to test for a reaction. The injection site should be watched for one month, at which time, if there is no reaction, you may proceed with treatment on your face. Most reactions to collagen occur during the first three days.
