At the cosmetic surgery office of Dr. Fredric Newman serving Westchester County, New York and Fairfield County, Connecticut, we utilize the most advanced skin resurfacing techniques. An alternative to other skin rejuvenation and resurfacing options, Coblation® can remove fine lines and wrinkles with a reduced recovery time following treatment. Coblation® uses low-heat radio frequency energy to treat wrinkles and sun damage, while limiting damage to the surrounding skin.
Coblation® is a relatively new technique for skin resurfacing that uses cooler radio wave energy instead of a laser to remove the outer layers of skin and cause the collagen in the skin to remold. It was approved by the Food and Drug Administration for wrinkle reduction in 2000. Coblation® skin resurfacing can be used to treat sun-damaged and weathered skin, fine lines, scars, and wrinkles around the eyes and mouth.
Like other skin rejuvenation techniques, Coblation® works by removing damaged surface layers of skin, thereby stimulating the body to produce new, healthy skin cells. The doctor uses a pen-like instrument to apply the radio frequency energy to the skin. Coblation® works by dissolving the damaged tissue rather than burning it away (as with the laser). The improvements come about when the skin creates healthy new cells to replace the removed cells, and when the collagen in the remaining layers remolds, thus causing the skin to tighten. For more detailed information on how Coblation® wrinkle treatment works, contact our Connecticut- and New York-area office for a skin resurfacing consultation.
Recovery time after Coblation® is significantly less than recovery time after laser skin resurfacing, largely because the cooler radio wave energy causes less damage to surrounding and underlying skin. For three to five days following Coblation® treatment, your skin will be red, but this is nearly a week less than with a laser procedure. Some residual redness may be present for up to a month.
Coblation® can produce results similar to laser skin resurfacing, resulting in the removal of fine lines, sun damage, and small acne scars. Deeper wrinkles and folds cannot be eliminated using this procedure. Facelift surgery might be a better option for patients with heavy wrinkles or deeper scarring. Overall, you can expect smoother skin and a reduction in fine lines and superficial skin damage.
