A partial or full mastectomy can be a physically and emotionally traumatic experience. Through state-of-the-art breast reconstruction, Dr. Fredric Newman can fashion you new, natural-looking and natural-feeling breasts. To schedule a personal breast reconstruction consultation at our Connecticut office near New York, please contact our plastic surgery center today.
As the result of major advances in cosmetic surgery over the last several years, reconstructive breast surgery can create breasts that both look and feel natural for women who have undergone a mastectomy. Depending on your particular situation, breast reconstruction surgery can be performed at the same time as a mastectomy or at a later time. Breast reconstruction is a permanent cosmetic enhancement that can rebuild your body and your self-esteem. During your breast reconstruction consultation at our New York- and Connecticut-area office, Dr. Newman can help you understand your surgical options and make the decision that is right for you.
For this type of breast reconstruction surgery, Dr. Newman will transplant excess skin, muscle, and fat from the lower abdominal area to the breast site. The abdominal area will be stitched closed, leaving a horizontal scar. (As such, tram flap reconstruction also allows the abdomen to be simultaneously tightened, similar to an abdominoplasty or tummy tuck.) The excess tissue taken from the abdomen forms the new breast. As TRAM flap breast reconstruction is a major surgical procedure, several days of hospitalization are required.
Latissimus flap breast reconstruction involves the creation of a flap on the patient's back. Dr. Newman will rotate the latissimus dorsi muscle forward, along with excess fat and skin, and position it at the breast site. At this point, a breast implant will be placed under the flap, and the back and breast will be stitched closed. The latissimus flap breast reconstruction is considered major surgery and generally requires several days of hospitalization.
For implant reconstruction, an expander will be placed below the chest muscles and will be periodically injected with saline. These injections will take place over several weeks, in which time the overlying skin will expand. Dr. Newman will then remove the expander and replace it with a breast implant.
