Ear Surgery Connecticut, New York

Feel More Comfortable and More Confident

Ear surgery (otoplasty) can prove beneficial for both kids and adults. At the Aesthetic Surgery Center – serving Connecticut and New York – we are proud to perform ear surgery procedures because we understand the effect large or protruding ears can have on a person’s self-esteem. As the ears are fully developed by the age of four, many children undergo ear surgery so that they can feel more comfortable among their peers at school. We also find that many adults who have suffered with large or protruding ears their entire lives feel the need to refine the shape of their ears for a more pleasing, less conspicuous look. Whether you are interested in ear surgery for your son or daughter or are considering otoplasty yourself, our team of medical professionals – led by Dr. Fredric Newman – would be happy to help. If you would like to schedule a consultation regarding ear surgery, we invite you to contact our Connecticut and New York-area practice today.

Ear Surgery Procedure

If you are unhappy with the size or shape of your ears, you may benefit from cosmetic ear surgery. We use one of two ear surgery techniques, depending on a patient’s needs and goals:

  • Ear Pinning – For patients who have protruding ears, an ear pinning technique can be used to position the ears closer to the side of the head. In ear pinning, skin is removed from the back of the ear and cartilage scoring or cartilage sparing techniques are utilized to rearrange the tissue. In cartilage scoring, incisions are made and excess tissue is removed. The drawback of this technique is that there is greater risk of scarring. In cartilage sparing, non-removable stitches or sutures are used to reposition the ear; this technique often results in a smoother, more natural appearance.
  • Ear Reduction – Patients who are unhappy with the overall size of their ears may benefit from ear reduction surgery. The procedure involves removing excess skin and cartilage from the ear and is performed with the patient’s desired results in mind. Ear reduction surgery can not only reduce the size of the ears but also improve the shape.

Ear surgery is an outpatient procedure that can be performed using local anesthetic. With pediatric ear surgery cases, a general anesthetic is often utilized for the comfort of the patient.

Ear Surgery Recovery and Results

Immediately after cosmetic ear surgery, the head will be wrapped in “fluff bandages” to promote proper healing and to help ensure that the treatment area stays dry and clean. After a few days, the initial bandage will be replaced by a smaller, lighter bandage. Once the bandages have been completely removed (roughly one week after the procedure), a special headband designed to help guide the ears into the desired position will have to be worn for several more weeks. Full recovery from cosmetic ear surgery typically takes up to six weeks, at which point the healing process should be complete. During the recovery process, it is important that patients avoid arduous activity.

When the healing process is complete, and bruising and swelling have subsided, the desired results will be apparent. Patients can expect smaller, less conspicuous ears that protrude less and appear more natural. Though ear surgery may result in minor physical changes, the emotional changes are tremendous; not feeling self-conscious about your ears can have a huge impact on your life.
