Considering Breast Enhancement
Women undergo breast augmentation surgery for several reasons. Many are self-consciousness about their natural breast size. Others find that pregnancy or significant weight loss has robbed their breasts of shapeliness and size, sometimes making clothes fit poorly. Some women have one breast that is dramatically smaller than the other. Reconstructive breast surgery patients may desire a return to the breast size of their pre-surgery years. If you are considering breast enhancement, contact our New York and Connecticut-area practice to schedule an initial consultation.
How Breast Augmentation Is Performed
During the initial breast enhancement consultation, Dr. Newman meets with the patient to determine if breast augmentation is right for her. We will not proceed until all of the patient’s questions have been answered and concerns about related risks and benefits have been addressed. If breast augmentation is right for the patient, she and Dr. Newman will discuss the new desired breast size, the placement of incisions, the type of breast implants needed, and whether the implant should go above or below the pectoral muscle.
Breast Enhancement Risks
Complications can arise from any type of surgery, and breast augmentation is no exception. Possible risks include:
- Breast implant leaks
- Rippling
- Numbness of the nipple and/or breast
- Infection
- Capsular contracture (tightening of the capsule surrounding the implant)
- Displaced implants
- Asymmetry
Additionally, in cases where implants have been placed above the chest muscle, there may be interference with mammography, which can require a special mammogram with multiple views taken by a trained radiologist. However, 98 percent of Dr. Newman’s implantations involve the placement of the implant under the chest muscle, in which case there should be no interference with mammography.
