How is liposuction performed?

Liposuction is performed using a device called a cannula. The cannula resembles a very thin, hollow tube, and it is attached to a machine that creates suction. The cannula is inserted into the treatment area through one or more tiny incisions (placed as discreetly as possible to avoid obvious scarring). As the cannula moves through the tissue in the treatment area, excess fat is suctioned away. The most common liposuction technique uses a large amount of fluid to replace that which is lost through surgery.
